Banking on a proven product – 'Hey Culligan Man'

It's a slogan that never grows old for this father and son team. "Hey Culligan Man" is an advertising phrase that originated more than five decades ago and still resonates with Don Felton and his son, Mark.


The Felton family has been operating a Culligan water franchise for 50 years and has served the Sacramento region since 1967. Don and his wife, Julie, began their Culligan association in 1963 when they bought the Culligan Bakersfield franchise, which they eventually sold 11 years ago.


Thanks to the proliferation of water conditioning operations expanding into virtually all areas of residential, commercial, industrial and municipal water quality improvement applications, the business continues to grow and the Feltons now serve 10 Northern California counties.


Unlike the multiple counties it serves, Culligan only deals with one banking institution – Community 1st Bank, which has offices in both Auburn and Roseville.


The catchy slogan and the recognition as a company that delivers a quality product and excellent customer service, has kept Culligan in the forefront of the water treatment industry for decades in the U.S. and internationally.


"Because we have the Culligan name, we don't have to explain who were are," said Don Felton, a Beverly Hills stockbroker before purchasing the Culligan business. "People already have a comfort level with us before we even start doing business with them."


A comfort level is also important to the Feltons when it comes to choosing a bank. That's one of the reasons Culligan has remained a customer of Community 1st. All Culligan's banking needs are met by the Community 1st staff that includes Gretchen Eischen, a Senior Vice President/Business Development.


"We consider Gretchen an important member of the Culligan team," Don Felton said. "She provides fabulous service. Gretchen is knowledgeable, efficient and extremely responsive. If we need something done, she responds immediately."


Eischen has high praise for the Feltons and the Culligan business, which has its Sacramento office at 1200 Arden Way and has a Woodland location at 1122 Pendegast Street.


The two locations employ 37 people. Job satisfaction runs high – the average employee has been at Culligan for 10 years.


"Culligan has been in the Sacramento area forever and is an outstanding company," Eischen said. "Don and Mark really value customer service and everyone in their company provides exemplary service to all their customers. Culligan is a great family-owned business."

Although the water filtration business has grown in sophistication, the Feltons continue to rely on its time-honored product and service: soft water.

"Treated water can make a huge difference in a home," Mark Felton said. "A family will get the benefits of softer hair and skin, cleaner clothes, and more delicious drinking water. It spoils you. That's one of the reasons we have such tremendous customer loyalty. We have some customers who have been with us for 25 to 30 years."
